Alicia Keys new Broadway production Stick Fly has been met with a lukewarm reception by critics.

Opening last week at the Cort Theater in Manhattan, the play, which sees Keys as Executive Producer, is an original story about the multiple layers of classism, racism, sexism, and family secrets.

Whilst many have taken to the net to say how brilliant the show is, many mainstream reviewers were not so impressed.

Reviewer David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter, dismissed the show as “scattershot entertainment,” adding it “lacked emotional substance” and “comes up short as both comedy and dysfunctional family drama.” Keys' original score was also attacked by Rooney.

New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli labelled the show’s director Kenny Leon “sluggish” while the New York Daily News’ critic Joe Dziemianowicz reiterated that the nearly three-hour show “could benefit from some tightening”.

Nevertheless the play about two brothers who bring their new girlfriends home to meet their families on the same weekend is set to run until January 29 2012.
