Police were forced to shut down a music festival last night after it ran over time because headline act Akon wouldn't perform until his outfits arrived.

The Supafest concert at Melbourne Showgrounds was forced to run later than the agreed 10.30pm cut-off time.

A police officer said: "Akon arrived late, he didn't get on stage until 10.33pm because he didn't have his costumes."

His entourage who had the costumes were caught on a nearby road which was shut earlier during the evening.

Police told the festival's organisers to shut the power off before 11pm. But Akon continued his performance until 11.25pm, when the staff had to shut it off.

This isn't the first time Akon's performance has caused trouble in Melbourne.

In October, eighteen people were injured and eight were taken to hospital after a fight broke out while he performed at HiSense arena.

Police said: "No one got injured at this event because we ramped up police numbers for showgrounds."

A council official has said because of the controversy the festival may not be repeated next year. Councillor Rose Iser said that the concert was a "disaster" and "unless we can improve the even management, reduce the volume of music and improve patron behaviour on departure from the venue, we should be mounting a campaign to end concerts at the showgrounds."
