It has been revealed that 28 of Rocawear's 56 staff were let go in the New Year, leading to speculation Jay-Z's signature clothing label could be in financial trouble.
Documents filed at the New York Department of Labour show half the business' workers were laid off January 6th, a day before the birth of Jay-Z's daughter Blue Ivy Carter. No further details of the dissmissals were given beyond the move being for "economic" reasons.
The New York Post quote a source as saying: "Jay-Z doesn't do anything without getting paid a lot of money - a lot more than Rocawear is generating."
Rocawear was started by Jay-Z and then business partner Damon Dash at the height of Roc-A-Fella Records popularity. Jay sold the rights to the label for $204m in 2007, but retained his stake in the company.
The news comes as Jay splashed out millions on renovating his 40/40 nightclub in Manhattan, and held a lavish re-opening party earlier this week.
Does the news surprise you? Let's be honest - when's the last time you saw anyone wearing Rocafella?
