George Lucas' Red Tails, the story of African-American pilots who fought in World War II, has hit the headlines recently with Lucas revealing the difficulty in getting a picture with a majority black cast made. This weekend Snoop Dogg threw his support behind the film by hosting a 200-guest private screening.

Many of the film's stars, including Terrence Howard, former The Wire star Tristan Wilds and movie co-writer and The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder also turned out for the event at the Arclight in Hollywood.

Snoop had also backed the film, which finished runner-up at the US box office this weekend taking $19.1m, through Twitter.

Lucas was forced to fund the entire $58m production of Red Tails after struggling to find adequate financial backing for the film, with many industry critics pointing to a lack of faith in African-American pictures.
