Grammy Award first-timer J. Cole turned up with a fool-proof way of beating his nerves last night - he brought his mum along with him.

A dapper-looking Cole arrived at the ceremony with his biggest fan as they both waited to hear the results for the Best New Artist award, which Cole eventually lost to folk rocker Bon Iver.

"I wanna win bad, but I understand it's out of my control. Everybody deserves it - how can you really pick best?" the Roc Nation rapper told interview Toure on the red carpet before being joined by Lupe and his mother.

The two families quickly exchanged greetings, an excited Cole telling Lupe: "I heard you brought your moms! Is this mom?"

A proud mama Fiasco described her son's success as "amazing," while J. Cole's mother agreed, revealing she once bought her Grammy-nominated offspring a $1,000 beat machine to help him reach his dreams.
