It's been revealed Alicia Keys turned down the chance to trace her family's historical roots after her grandmother warned the star not to go through with it.
Alicia was invited to take part in the PBS series Finding Your Roots, in which African-American historian Dr. Henry Louis Gates traces celebrities' family backgrounds. Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson and Condoleezza Rice have all appeared on the show.
However, Dr. Gates recently explained Alicia backed out of process when her grandmother warned the singer not to do it.
Dr. Gates explained: "Alicia Keys, who I love as a friend of mine, agreed to be in the first series, and as you know, she’s mixed."
"Her African-American grandmother said ‘Baby…’, we send people a form, we need as much information as you can give us. Like the names of your parents, where they were born, grandparents etc., whatever you can give us. It makes our job a lot simpler right?"
"Her grandmother said ‘Baby, you can’t be in the series. I can’t tell you why, but you can’t be in the series.’"
Strange... what could be in Alicia's past her grandmother doesn't want her to know?
