Akon's court date to face misdemeanour endangerment and harassment charges in relation to a "fan-throwing" incident has been postponed until next month.
The singer was performing in Fishkill, New York, in June when an audience member threw an object at him.
Akon is accused of hauling the culprit up onto the stage and throwing him back into the audience.
The youth landed on another teenager, who later claimed she had been diagnosed with a concussion.
Akon - who pleaded not guilty to charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment in December - was absent from the hearing in Fishkill, New York on Wednesday.
The judge overseeing the case has ordered the star back to court on 3 September to face a possible deposition hearing.
