Isaac Hayes, who was most revered for his 'Theme From Shaft', died on Sunday after suffering a stroke.
The soul legend, who was 65, was found unresponsive in his home in Memphis by his family. He died later in a local hospital.
Hayes' doctor, Dr David Kraus, listed stroke on his death certificate and had also been treating the singer for high blood pressure, a police spokesperson said.
In a statement, Hayes' family said: "While he was an iconic figure to many, to us he was husband, father and friend.
"We will ever miss his love, wisdom, humour and the familiar comfort of his voice."
In addition to his music career, Hayes also starred in a number of TV series, including South Park, where he played Chef.
The popularity of Hayes’ role in the cartoon brought him fresh chart success in the UK with ‘Chocolate Salty Balls’, which topped the charts.
