A proposed plan to name a Memphis airport after late Soul legend Isaac Hayes has been dashed by officials in the city.

Hayes was honoured by the city on Monday with a four hour ceremony attended by 3000 people.

At the event US Representative Steve Cohen called for the city's airport to be named after Hayes.

However, Memphis International Airport chairman Arnold Perl and other officials have vetoed the idea saying they didn't want to honour just one famous son of the city.

Perl said: "Isaac Hayes was one of the many great Memphis musicians and a great ambassador for Memphis. We've been fortunate he's passed through our lives.

“It's always been believed that the name Memphis International Airport best serves our needs.

"Isaac Hayes was a great ambassador for Memphis music. We'd also have to acknowledge that Memphis has many individuals who have made lasting contributions."

In the past many calls have been made for the airport to be named after Elvis Presley but these have always be vetoed too.

Cohen has not given up on the idea and says he will now write to the Airport Authority.
