Will they create a stir?

By Daniel Melia on Thursday 9th October 2008

wenn

The sculptures of a topless Michelle Obama as an embodiment of America's future have gone on display in New York.

The bust's by Daniel Edwards entitled 'Michelle Obama's Makeover For America' can be seen at Manhattan's Leo Kesting Gallery.

Edwards says the goal of the sculptures was to "create a look for Michelle Obama that eliminates excessive comparisons to Jackie Kennedy".

What do you think of the sculptures?

  • This sculpture is in bad taste. When one evaluates sculpture, one is interested in content. The content here is definitely to elicit an emotional response among African Americans to make us love Michelle Obama because she is an African American queen. (Actually, the bronze African sculptures of royal female personages I have seen do not show more than head and shoulders. No Nigerian or Ugandan flag around the neck, either.) I have a friend who is a Romanian gypsy, who would be a Romanian Gypsy-American. I would love to have a portrait of her, but not dressed like a Romanian Gypsy-American. The same goes for my Italian-American friends, my Irish-American friends, my Polish-American friends. If any of them were to be First Lady, I would not be interested in seeing them portrayed in the costumes of Romania, Italy, Ireland, or Poland. If any of them were to be First Lady, I would hope they would be doing exactly as Michelle Obama, and that is, representing all Americans. The only claim to fame this sculpture will ever have is as "Kitsch". DEFINITION: Kitsch ... refers to the types of art that are aesthetically deficient (whether or not being sentimental, glamorous, theatrical, or creative) and that make creative gestures which merely imitate the superficial appearances of art through repeated conventions and formulae. Excessive sentimentality often is associated with the term. (The artist's name and the current whereabouts of this work should appear as a legend to the photo.)

Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog). George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes. And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stenc
